In many of the places we work, internet access is more than just a luxury for communities; it is a necessity for survival and growth, as well as an important part of community life. However, in these areas, connectivity is poor, and populations struggle to afford data packages, cutting them off from the world. This can have devastating effects on the lives of those living there. Without internet access, communication and the provision of vital information and services are hindered, and opportunities for education, employment, and connecting with loved ones are lost. In South Sudan, where security is fragile, connectivity is a lifeline, providing safety information for community members. Internet access also provides critical information for farmers and cooperatives, and local opportunities for IDPs and returnees.

We at Community Development Centre (CDC) are thrilled to announce a partnership with Jangala, a UK-based charity dedicated to enabling internet access for people in need of urgent humanitarian aid or longer-term development assistance. Ā Jangala’s innovative product, Big Box, is a lightweight, briefcase-sized device that can transform any form of internet connectivity into Wi-Fi that is easily managed by teams on the ground and easily scaled from tens to thousands of users. Big Box eliminates the need for costly technical expertise and drastically lowers the barriers to deploying internet access in challenging situations.

“The Centre is committed to improving the lives of people in underserved communities. Our partnership with Jangala and the use of their Big Box device allows us to achieve that goal by providing internet access, which is essential for growth and development in today’s world. We believe that access to information and connectivity can make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve ” Sebit Martin, Executive Director (CDC South Sudan/Uganda)

This partnership will allow us to provide internet access and improve connectivity at our community Centers in the Ugandan Rhino Refugee Camp and Yei River County, South Sudan, ultimately connecting communities. This will have a positive impact on the lives of refugees and community members, providing them with access to information, opportunities, and a way to connect with their loved ones. We are excited to have received the Big Box in both South Sudan and Uganda this week and can’t wait to witness the positive impact it will have on the communities we serve.

ā€œThank you jangala for your kind support, we are surely thrilled to be able to provide internet access to those that needs it most yet couldn’t access it, personally, I am so happy to see the big box, it’s an amazing technology that will make a positive impact in people’s lives and I am so proud to receive itā€¦ā€ ā€“ Jackline Yangi Justin, Programs Support Officer (CDC South Sudan)

“The big box is here now, we are so glad it will serve a vital resource for especially refugee communities in providing access to crucial information, given the challenges of displacement and separation, this will play an important role in connecting families and communities” – Barnabas Samuel, Development Programs Manager (CDC Uganda/South Sudan)
